FAQs

What Sod is Best for Cincinnati and surrounding areas?

There are generally only two grasses used in Cincinnati: Turf Type Tall Fescue and Bluegrass varieties.  Tall Fescue is preferred by homeowners for its look, feel, and ease of maintenance.  Because it is better suited for the Cincinnati climate, Eastgate Sod only grows and sells Turf Type Tall Fescue.

Why Grow Tall Fescue Sod rather than Bluegrass?

Tall Fescue provides a number of advantages to homeowners over the Bluegrass varieties.

  • No thatch build-up

  • Fescue grows a very deep root system which is very adaptable to the Cincinnati soils, which usually have a very high content of clay.

  • Fescue is very resistant to insects.  Only grubs, which affect all grasses, cause problems with Fescue.

  • Fescue is only susceptible to 1 disease problem compared to 4 or 5 diseases which affect Bluegrass.

  • Fescue requires lower maintenance and less water than Bluegrass.

Why use Netted Turf-Type Tall Fescue?

Eastgate Sod only grows netted turf-type Tall Fescue.  The Fescue is netted for easy handling and to protect the sod from tearing.  Fescue sod is generally very tender and will tear very easily when grown without netting.  Others who grow Tall Fescue without netting generally include 8-10% Bluegrass to allow handling of the sod.  The problem with including Bluegrass with Fescue is that if we have several wet summers, the Bluegrass can take over the Tall Fescue.

When is the best time to install Turfgrass Sod?

Turfgrass can be installed year round as long as it is available, even on frozen ground; however, sodding during the heat of summer will require more watering than during cooler periods.

How Much Sod will I need for my project?

Measure the area to be covered to determine your square-yardage requirements. Using a tape-measure you can quickly determine the length and width of the area. Multiplying the length and width together will give you the square-footage.
